Power tool safety starts before you pull the trigger. Read the manual, inspect the tool and accessory, wear protection that matches the hazard, secure the workpiece, and keep the work area clear.
If the tool, battery, guard, cord, accessory, or workpiece behaves unexpectedly, stop and correct the problem before continuing.
Inspect the Tool Before You Start
Give the tool and its power source a quick visual check before each use. Look for a cracked housing, damaged cord or plug, loose or missing parts, a sticking switch, a damaged guard, or anything else that could affect normal operation. Do not use a corded tool with damaged insulation, an altered plug, intermittent power, or another obvious electrical defect.
For cordless tools, inspect the battery pack before installing it. Stop using a battery that is cracked, leaking, swollen, unusually hot, or visibly damaged. Do not open, rebuild, or attempt an internal battery repair. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for service and disposal. Check that required guards, handles, depth stops, and other safety-related parts are present and move or lock as the manual describes. Never remove, wedge open, bypass, or disable a guard, trigger lock, brake, or other protective feature to make a task faster.
Before changing a bit, blade, wheel, sanding attachment, or other accessory, unplug the tool or remove the battery as directed by the manufacturer. Remove chuck keys and adjustment wrenches before starting the tool.
Match the Accessory to the Tool and Material
The correct accessory is part of the safety system. A bit, blade, wheel, disc, pad, or attachment must fit the tool’s mounting system and be intended for the material and operation you are performing.
Check the tool and accessory instructions for size, shank or arbor type, guard requirements, operating mode, and other compatibility limits. For accessories with a maximum-speed rating—especially abrasive wheels and discs—the accessory’s rated speed must not be exceeded by the tool.
Do not improvise with an accessory simply because it can be made to fit. If the manual requires a specific guard, flange, side handle, backing pad, or mounting hardware, use the specified parts and configuration.
Set Up a Clear, Dry Work Area
A stable work area gives you room to control the tool if the material shifts or an accessory binds. Clear loose hardware, offcuts, rags, cords, and other clutter from the bench and floor. Make sure you have enough light to see the workpiece, cutting or drilling path, and your footing clearly.
Keep the work area dry. Corded tools should not be used in damp or wet conditions unless the equipment and setup are specifically designed for that environment. Keep electrical cords away from heat, oil, sharp edges, and the tool’s cutting path.
If you need an extension cord, use one suitable for the environment and electrical load. Outdoor work requires a cord rated for outdoor use. Do not defeat a three-prong grounding plug, and use GFCI protection where required or recommended for the location and task. The tool manual should take priority when it specifies cord type, conductor size, or maximum extension length.
Keep flammable liquids, vapors, and easily ignited debris away from tools that can produce heat or sparks. Dust should also be controlled rather than allowed to accumulate around tools, outlets, heaters, or other possible ignition sources.
Secure and Support the Workpiece
A workpiece that can move unexpectedly is difficult to control safely. Clamp or otherwise secure lumber, sheet goods, pipe, and small parts whenever the task allows. Use a vise, jig, clamp, or other suitable support instead of holding a small piece in your palm while drilling, cutting, grinding, or sanding it.
Support long or flexible material so it cannot tip, sag, twist, or pinch a blade as the operation progresses. Before a cut, think about what will happen to both the main workpiece and the offcut. Neither should be able to fall into the tool, strike you, or trap the accessory.
Keep your hands out of the expected path of a blade, bit, wheel, or other moving accessory, including where it will exit the far side of the material. Maintain balanced footing and reposition the work rather than reaching beyond a stable stance.
Before drilling or cutting into a finished wall, floor, or ceiling, consider hidden electrical wiring, plumbing, fasteners, and protective metal plates. Use an appropriate detection method, understand its limitations, and stop if you encounter unexpected metal or unusual resistance. Do not continue if you suspect energized wiring until the area can be evaluated safely.
Wear PPE for the Actual Hazard
Eye protection is a baseline for most drilling, cutting, grinding, and sanding tasks because chips, dust, fragments, or broken accessories can be thrown toward the operator. Use impact-rated safety eyewear with side protection that is appropriate for the job. Ordinary prescription glasses are not a substitute for protective eyewear unless they are specifically designed and rated for the hazard.
For operations that can throw larger chips, fragments, or heavy debris, a face shield may add protection, but it should be worn over appropriate safety glasses or goggles rather than used as the only eye protection.
Use hearing protection when the tool and exposure are loud enough to create a hearing hazard. Noise risk depends on both level and duration, so repeated short tasks can still add up. Select hearing protection that fits properly and does not prevent you from maintaining necessary awareness of the work area.
Dust protection depends on the material. Use the tool’s dust collection or extraction provisions when available, and select respiratory protection based on the actual hazard rather than assuming a disposable dust mask is suitable for every material.
Stop before disturbing materials that may contain asbestos or other hazardous substances that require specialized handling. Older painted surfaces can also create lead dust when sanded, cut, or otherwise disturbed. Identify the material risk first and follow applicable EPA guidance or use a qualified professional when the hazard is outside ordinary DIY work.
Keep long hair secured and avoid loose sleeves, jewelry, drawstrings, or anything else that can reach a moving part. Gloves are not automatically safe or unsafe for every power-tool task: use them only when appropriate for the material and tool, and never allow glove material to get near an exposed rotating chuck, spindle, bit, blade, or abrasive where it could become entangled.
Use a Consistent Start-to-Finish Routine
A simple routine reduces the chance that an important setup step gets skipped:
- Read the manual for an unfamiliar tool or operation. Pay attention to required guards, handles, accessories, operating modes, and prohibited uses.
- Inspect the tool, power source, and accessory. Do not proceed with damaged or questionable equipment.
- Inspect the material. Look for embedded fasteners, cracks, unstable areas, or other features that could affect the operation.
- Install and set up the correct accessory. Secure it exactly as the manufacturer directs and make adjustments before the tool is powered for use.
- Clamp and support the work. Make sure the workpiece and offcut cannot shift into the accessory or fall unexpectedly.
- Take a stable position. Use required handles and keep your body out of the likely line of a blade, wheel, debris stream, or kickback path as the tool manual directs.
- Start smoothly and use controlled pressure. Do not force the accessory through the material when the tool is slowing, chattering, overheating, or binding.
- Wait for moving parts to stop. Set the tool down only when the blade, bit, wheel, or pad has stopped, and disconnect the power source before adjustments, accessory changes, or jam clearing.
Recognize Binding, Kickback, and Stop-Work Signals
Binding happens when a blade, bit, wheel, or other accessory becomes pinched or stuck. The resulting reaction can twist a handheld drill, push or pull a saw, or cause another rapid movement. The exact kickback behavior depends on the tool, so the manufacturer’s instructions for grip, body position, guards, handles, and material support are more important than a single rule applied to every tool.
Reduce binding risk by using sharp, undamaged accessories, keeping the work properly supported, and avoiding a cut or drilling setup that can close around the accessory. On tools supplied with or requiring an auxiliary handle, use it as directed. Never hold a guard open or alter a safety device to get around a binding problem.
Stop immediately if you notice smoke, a burning odor, severe vibration, wobble, a damaged guard, repeated circuit trips, unusual arcing, sudden power loss, or an abnormally hot battery. Disconnect the power source when safe and inspect only user-serviceable items identified in the manual. Internal electrical, battery, motor, charger, switch, or control faults belong with the manufacturer, an authorized service center, or a qualified repair professional.
Slow Down When the Tool Tells You To
Do not compensate for a slow cut or hole by automatically pushing harder. Excessive pressure can increase heat, reduce control, damage accessories, and make binding more likely. If the tool slows sharply, chatters, burns the material, produces excessive heat, or leaves an unexpectedly rough result, stop and reassess the accessory, speed or mode setting, material support, and technique.
Do not use a power tool when you are too tired, distracted, rushed, or impaired to react normally. Keep bystanders, children, and pets away from the immediate work area, especially when debris, noise, cords, or moving tools create hazards beyond the workbench itself.
Build a repeatable setup habit: inspect the tool, choose the correct accessory, protect your eyes and hearing, secure the work, maintain a stable position, and stop when something changes unexpectedly. The specific tool manual always takes priority over general advice.
