That final grit leaves wood smooth enough to look finished while still open enough for a penetrating stain to color evenly. Sanding to 220 grit or finer before applying a typical penetrating stain can reduce absorption and leave the color lighter or patchier.

The right grit is not only about smoothness. It controls how readily the wood accepts pigment, how visible sanding scratches are after color goes on, and how much work you create for yourself later. Sand With the Grain for the Final Pass

A random orbital sander does not follow a single grain direction, so it can leave faint circular scratches. They may be hard to see on raw wood, then stand out after dark stain settles into them. On plywood, follow the direction of the face veneer grain and use very light pressure. The decorative veneer can be only a fraction of an inch thick. If the surface changes color in one area or a darker underlayer begins to show, stop sanding. A stained-through veneer usually needs repair or replacement rather than more sanding.

Prevent Blotches That Sanding Alone Cannot Fix

Pine, birch, maple, alder, and cherry can absorb stain unevenly because their grain density varies across the board. Sanding to the correct grit helps, but it will not fully solve blotching on its own.

A wood conditioner designed for use before stain can reduce extreme dark patches on blotch-prone species. Be careful with sander pressure, too. Pressing harder does not make a random orbital sander work better. It can create uneven sanding, heat buildup, swirls, and rounded edges. Replace clogged or worn discs rather than forcing them to cut.
