Do not assume that one bright fixture in the middle of the ceiling will light the room evenly. A centered light can leave a wall-mounted bench, shelving area, or machine station in shadow. In many small shops, two or more moderately bright fixtures spaced across the work area produce more useful coverage than one intense central fixture.
Pay attention to light distribution, not just fixture brightness. Shelves, cabinets, garage-door tracks, and tall tools can block overhead light.

Task lighting puts light directly on close work. Useful locations include the main workbench, drill press or miter saw station, assembly table, sharpening area, and surface-inspection area.

Electrical and Mounting Safety
Lighting upgrades should not create electrical hazards.

Stand at the bench and make a few layout marks. Position a drill over scrap without powering it. Check a saw station with the tool off. Sand a scrap board, clean the surface, and inspect it from your normal working position.
The areas that still make you lean, squint, or turn the workpiece are the places that need better light.
