Use an impact driver when you need high rotational force to drive long or large fasteners, especially into dense wood or when installing many similar screws.

For drilling precise holes, setting delicate hardware, or driving screws flush in finished surfaces, a drill driver usually gives you better control.

What an impact driver does differently

An impact driver is a compact fastening tool that uses repeated rotational impacts to help keep a bit turning when resistance increases. Instead of transferring all that resistance to your wrist, an internal hammer-and-anvil mechanism delivers rapid bursts of torque. You hear this as the familiar rattling or hammering sound.

That action makes an impact driver particularly effective with screws and bolts that would make a drill driver slow down, twist, or strain. Long screws and dense lumber

A slipping bit is not a sign that you need more force. It usually means the bit type or size is wrong, worn, or not seated fully in the screw head. Match Phillips, square-drive, Torx, and other drive styles exactly. Many modern construction and deck screws include a matching bit for a reason.

Use impact-rated driver bits and bit holders in an impact driver. They are designed to tolerate repeated torsional shock. Inspect bits before use. Replace one with rounded corners, cracking, heavy wear, or a loose fit in the screw recess.

  1. Mark the fastener location and drill a pilot hole or clearance hole if the material, screw instructions, or location near an edge calls for one.
