The main types of drill bits and their uses come down to the material being drilled: twist bits handle many everyday jobs, while wood, masonry, metal, tile, and large-hole work each call for a more specialized cutting shape.

Match the bit to the material first, then set up the drill to suit the task.

Start With the Material, Not the Hole Size

Drill bits are cutting tools, and their tip geometry controls how they enter and remove material. A sharp, pointed bit meant for wood can tear metal. A general-purpose bit can make a small hole in soft wood, but it will not produce the clean, flat-bottomed hole needed for a cabinet hinge.

Before choosing a bit, identify the material at the exact drilling location. Drywall over a wood stud is different from drywall over steel framing. A ceramic wall tile may sit over cement board or another backing material. Concrete, brick, mortar, stone, plastic, hardwood, and sheet metal all respond differently to heat, pressure, and drilling speed.

Brad-point bits for clean wood holes

Brad-point bits have a sharp center point and cutting spurs around the outside edge. The point keeps the bit centered, while the spurs score the hole perimeter before the cutting edges remove the middle. This produces cleaner entry holes in softwood, hardwood, plywood, and many wood-based panels.

Use a brad-point bit when placement and appearance matter, such as shelf-pin holes, furniture parts, trim work, and hardware installation. It is not intended for metal, masonry, or tile. For the cleanest exit side, clamp a scrap board tightly behind the workpiece and drill into it.

Spade bits for fast, larger holes in wood

A spade bit, also called a paddle bit, has a wide, flat cutting blade with a pointed center. It drills larger holes quickly in framing lumber, studs, joists, and other rough woodwork. Common uses include openings for pipes, cables, and bolts where a polished finish is not the priority.

Spade bits can tear fibers as they exit, especially if pushed aggressively. Keep the drill straight, use a firm grip, and ease pressure when the point approaches the far side. They are generally a poor choice for finished furniture, thin material, or precise hardware holes.

Auger bits for deep holes in lumber

Auger bits use a threaded lead screw to pull themselves into wood and deep flutes to clear chips. They are made for fast, deep drilling in solid lumber, including construction framing. The threaded tip means the bit needs very little forward pressure once it starts.

That self-feeding action is helpful but can also surprise a beginner. Keep both hands on a drill with a side handle, especially with larger diameters. If the bit binds, release the trigger rather than trying to overpower the drill. Do not use an auger bit in metal, masonry, or tile.

Forstner bits for flat-bottomed and precise wood holes

Forstner bits create smooth, flat-bottomed holes with clean edges. They can drill partial-depth recesses, overlapping holes, and holes near the edge of a board – work that ordinary twist bits cannot do well. They are often used for concealed cabinet hinges, dowel locations, and recessed hardware.

Because a Forstner bit removes a wide area of material, it creates substantial resistance and heat. Use a low drill speed, keep the work clamped, and occasionally withdraw the bit to clear chips. Hole saws for very large openings

A hole saw is a cylindrical cup with teeth around its rim and a pilot bit in the center. It cuts a circular plug rather than grinding away the entire hole, making it useful for larger openings in wood, drywall, plastic, and some metals. Door hardware, pipe openings, and access holes are typical uses.

Choose a hole saw rated for the material. A wood-oriented hole saw is not automatically suitable for steel or masonry. Start slowly so the pilot bit establishes the location, hold the drill square to the surface, and back the saw out periodically to clear chips. A hole saw can grab hard when it breaks through, so secure the workpiece and maintain a stable stance.

Masonry bits for brick, block, and concrete

Masonry bits have a hardened carbide cutting tip designed to crush and cut mineral-based materials. Use them for brick, concrete block, mortar, and concrete when installing anchors or mounting hardware. A drill’s hammer setting adds a rapid tapping action that helps in appropriate masonry.

Use rotary-only mode for tile and other brittle surfaces. Once drilling directly into suitable masonry, hammer mode may help when the drill, bit, and project requirements support it. Too much pressure can overheat the bit or damage the surface. Let the tool work, clear dust from the hole regularly, and wear eye protection.

Do not assume every hard wall is solid masonry. Drilling into a post-tensioned concrete slab, structural concrete, or an unknown wall can involve hidden reinforcement, electrical wiring, plumbing, or other hazards. Stop if you hit unexpected metal, the drill suddenly breaks through, or resistance changes sharply. Tile and glass bits for brittle surfaces

Spear-point tile and glass bits have a carbide tip shaped to begin a hole without cracking a brittle glazed surface. They are suited to ceramic tile, many porcelain tiles, and glass when used at low speed without hammer action. The correct bit depends on the tile hardness, so check the bit packaging and manufacturer guidance.

Keep the bit from skidding by placing painter’s tape over the marked location or using a guide. Start slowly with light pressure. Heat is the enemy of tile and glass, so pause as needed and use cooling only as directed for the bit and work area. Once the bit reaches the backing material, switch to the bit appropriate for that material.

Set the Drill Up for the Bit

A bit will not perform well if it is loosely installed or run at the wrong speed. Unplug a corded drill or remove the battery before changing bits. Insert the shank straight into the chuck and tighten all chuck jaws evenly. A bit held off-center will wobble, cut an oversized hole, and may break.

Use low speed for larger bits, metal, hole saws, and Forstner bits. Higher speed is more appropriate for small bits in wood and plastic, provided the bit is cutting cleanly. If you see smoke, smell scorching, or get darkened metal chips, stop and let the bit cool. Excess speed, a dull bit, or packed chips are common causes.

An impact driver is mainly a fastening tool. Some hex-shank drill bits are specifically rated for impact-driver use, but not every bit is. Check both tool and accessory instructions instead of assuming that a hex shank alone makes a bit compatible.

Avoid the Mistakes That Ruin Bits and Workpieces

Dull bits cause many drilling problems. A dull twist bit may squeal, generate heat, and make fine dust instead of clean chips. A dull wood bit may leave a fuzzy or burned hole. Replace the bit or have it professionally sharpened when appropriate rather than forcing it harder.

Also avoid drilling into an unsupported workpiece. Clamp boards, metal, and small parts to a stable surface whenever possible. Holding a small piece by hand can allow it to spin if the bit catches, causing injury or a damaged hole.

For wall-mounted work, confirm the location before drilling. Use a suitable method to check for studs and possible concealed utilities, and do not rely on one detector reading alone. Follow hardware and anchor instructions for hole diameter and depth. An anchor will not hold correctly if the hole is too large, too shallow, or full of drilling dust.

A correctly matched bit does more than make a hole. It keeps the drill easier to control, protects the workpiece, and gives fasteners and hardware the support they were designed to have.
